Riding Vintage Enduros on the Sand Beaches of Lake Superior

Packed with dirt bikes, tents, fly rods, and dreams of adventure - the Romad crew went on a strike mission to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in search of remote coastlines, forest trails, and unforgettable memories.

As we explored deeper into the Keweenaw peninsula we had heard about a beach that allows you to drive your 4x4 vehicles or dirt bikes on the coastline - a dream for any adrenaline enthusiast. We had heard from a friend, of a friend, there was a town called Gay, with a bar, known as The Gay Bar. Sure enough, as we made our way into this 4 block town, there heralded the infamous Gay Bar, however, with light fading and little time to explore we headed onward to find the trail head leading to the coast. Leaving the libations for after.

Once we found the trail, it opened up to the most incredible panoramic view of Lake Superior with an endless stretch of a perfectly sandy coastline. If I This must have been an old excavation site, or logging zone, as the "beach" stretches for almost a quarter mile inland to the tree lines, all composed of sand and dirt.

We ripped the trucks around the coast taking in the views before unloading the dirt bikes and letting loose.

It was an incredible experience, there was no one to be seen and we were the only ones on the beach. For riding dirt bikes, the sand was loose but there were old mounds from previous excavation or construction work that left berms, hills, and tracks perfect for ripping a dirt bike or quad.

The crew had a blast, and we thought about setting up the roof top tents and staying on the beach for the night, but ultimately decided to trek onward and try to reach the northernmost point of the Michigan's peninsula before nightfall.
